IBEW 569 Joins U.S. Department of Energy’s Workplace Charging Challenge

Workplace Charging Reduces Carbon Footprint, Creates Skilled Electrical Jobs

San Diego, Calif (Dec 1, 2016)  – Today, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 569 announced it has joined hundreds of businesses, non-profits, educational institutions and public agencies around the nation to support the Workplace Charging Challenge, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiative aiming to partner with 500 U.S. employers offering workplace charging by 2018. Launched in 2013, over 230 employers have pledged to not only provide plug-in electric vehicle charging to their workforce but to share best practices through a nationwide network of information exchange.

IBEW Local 569 Business Manager Nicholas Segura commented, “We are proud to join the Department of Energy’s Workplace Charging Challenge. Providing free workplace charging to our members and employees helps reduce our carbon footprint while demonstrating the positive economic benefits of transportation electrification. IBEW electricians have installed hundreds of electric vehicle charging units throughout San Diego County and anticipate thousands more thanks to California’s groundbreaking climate policies and SDG&E’s Power Your Drive program.  The clean transportation industry is creating skilled electrical jobs and training opportunities while helping to combat climate change and clean our air.”

During the day, the electric vehicle charging units at IBEW 569 draw from on-site rooftop solar, enabling vehicles to power up with clean, renewable energy.

As part of its skilled electrical training, IBEW 569 offers the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program to ensure qualified, state-certified electricians are safely and properly installing electric vehicle charging units.  This skilled training is provided throughout the United States and is a voluntary collaboration between electric vehicle industry stakeholders and experts to address technical requirements, safety imperatives, and training needs.
