Joint Statement of Sierra Club, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 569 and San Diego Community Choice Alliance on San Diego City Council decision to pursue Community Choice Energy through a Joint Powers Authority
If done right, Community Choice Energy can help our region meet our climate goals while creating high-quality union jobs and delivering local investments and local inclusive hiring, particularly in communities of concern.
As San Diego moves forward with a CCA, the City must ensure it includes strong labor standards that benefit workers and the environment. CCA is more than just lower rates — it is about creating high-quality career paths, healthy and resilient communities and retaining wealth within the community to spur local economic development. We look forward to working with our partners and elected leaders in the coming months to create a local power agency that reflects the labor and economic provisions outlined by progressive Council leaders including the use of local businesses, state-certified apprenticeship programs, pre-apprenticeships, neutrality, prevailing wages, community benefits agreements and project labor agreements to deliver middle-class jobs, equity and local economic growth for the residents and businesses it serves.
