Statement of Sierra Club and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 569 on Mayor Faulconer’s Weak and Deficient Community Choice Energy Proposal
As cities in our region consider Community Choice Energy (CCE), the Sierra Club and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 569 urge elected leaders to ensure the CCE program being created benefits the community and reflects the progressive values of their constituents. This includes transparency, public engagement, equity, and good, local middle-class jobs with prevailing wages and collective bargaining.
Unfortunately, the current draft governing document, known as the Joint Powers Authority (JPA) agreement, for the CCE being circulated by the Mayor of San Diego falls short of fulfilling these values and does not even deliver on basic points of principle outlined by the San Diego City Council in the JPA Resolution passed earlier this year.
We call on our elected leaders and prospective JPA partners to ensure that the creation of one of the largest CCE programs in the state have a governing document that reflects the progressive provisions we have laid out, which are modeled after CCE policies and programs from across California
