Appointment of Julie Roland as 569’s New Political Director
It is with great pride that IBEW Local 569 of San Diego announces today that Julie Roland is 569’s new Political Director. 
Julie has been an integral part of the San Diego community ever since she got stationed here in 2017 as a Navy helicopter pilot. In addition to her admirable military career, where she flew missions in the South China Sea and the Persian Gulf, Julie got involved in numerous local organizations including the San Diego Women’s Foundation, Rotary Club, League of Women Voters, Truman National Security Project, the Lawyers Club of San Diego, and the San Diego Leadership Alliance. Appointed by the mayor to do so, Julie also served on the Mission Bay Park Committee. For fun, she regularly performs as a magician around San Diego—and the world.
On top of those involvements, Julie started her own nonprofit and attended law school at the University of San Diego, where she was elected the President of the Public Interest Law Foundation and graduated with distinction for her stellar academic performance, volunteer work, and children’s advocacy. Of note, Julie conducted over 450 pro bono hours between Legal Aid Society San Diego, USD Law’s Children’s Advocacy Institute, and USD Law’s Housing Rights Clinic.
After ten years as an officer, Julie separated from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in the summer of 2025. Since then, she earned a Master of Laws from Columbia University while working as District Director–and then Deputy Chief of Staff–to a New York State Assemblymember. Julie is overjoyed to be back in San Diego and eager to apply her skills and commitment to public service, civic engagement, and community by fighting for working families in the city she has come to call home.
“Julie’s energy is unmatched,” said IBEW 569 Business Manager Jeremy Abrams. “While she was an active-duty Naval Officer, she went to law school in her free time, on top of over a dozen other community involvements. In fact, years before she got out of the military, she was already showing up and finding ways to support IBEW and the local labor movement. I am impressed with her work ethic and passion, as well as her ability to build enduring relationships. She is an incredibly dynamic leader, team player, and advocate, and we are excited to watch her deliver big things for our members.”
